See what software is installed

Look up the applications your company's computers report as installed, see which versions are in use, find the machines that have a given one, and download the list.

For: IT administratorPlan: All plans

Before you start

  • This is an IT task, but it needs no technical knowledge: you only read and search a list. If you do not look after your company’s computers yourself, share what you find with the person who does.
  • A role that lets you view devices. That shows “DEVICES” in the left menu. In the built-in set, administrators have that permission, and so do members of the “IT” group.
  • At least one computer enrolled, with the Zonitix Agent installed, so that there is software to list. See Enroll a device. Until device setup has been started for at least one platform, “Software” is greyed out in the menu.

Read the list

  1. Step 1: Open Software

Go to DevicesSoftware. The page lists each application once, however many computers have it, with the most widely installed at the top. The number of titles is shown beside the search box.

  2. Step 2: Read a row

“Software” is the application’s name, with its publisher underneath when the agent reported one. “Platforms” shows which kinds of computer have it. “Devices” is how many computers have it. “Versions” shows each version in use, with the number of computers on it.

When there are more versions than fit, the last label reads “+N more”. A label that reads “unknown” means the agent reported the application without a version.

  3. Step 3: Search for one application

Type part of its name in “Search software…”. The list narrows as you type.

Find the machines

  1. Step 4: See which computers have it

Click the number in the “Devices” column. A window opens with the application’s name and a table of “Host”, “Platform” and “Version”.

To see only the computers on one version, for example an old one you want gone, click that version’s label in the “Versions” column instead.

  2. Step 5: Open a computer

Click a host name in that window. It opens DevicesInventory searched for that computer, where you can read its details and send it commands.

Take the list away

  1. Step 6: Export CSV

Click the download button at the top right of the list (its tooltip reads “Export CSV”). A CSV file, a plain table that opens in any spreadsheet program, downloads to your computer. If you have typed a search, only the matching titles are exported.

Each export is written to the audit log with your name.

The list shows what each agent last reported. It is refreshed when an agent next sends its inventory, not the moment something is installed or removed. Click the “Refresh” button to reload what Zonitix currently holds.
An agent does not list everything on a computer. It lists the applications in the Applications folder on a Mac, the programs registered with Windows, and the dpkg or rpm packages on Linux, up to 2,000 per computer. A program installed anywhere else does not appear, and a Linux machine with neither dpkg nor rpm lists nothing.

What you should see

A table of applications with counts, and a line such as “214 titles” beside the search box (your number will differ).

The file you download is named zonitix-software- followed by today’s date.

If something goes wrong

Software is greyed out in the menu: "Finish setting up a platform to see the software on your devices"
Device setup has not been started. Open Devices, Settings and follow Enroll a device.
"No software reported yet."
The agents have not sent an inventory yet. They report installed applications on their next inventory check-in. Check on Devices, Inventory that the computers are online.
"No software matches this search."
Try a shorter or different part of the name. The search looks at the application name only.
"No enrolled device reports this software."
No enrolled computer reports it now. The list may have changed since the page loaded: close the window and click Refresh.
"Could not load the software inventory." or "Could not export the software list."
Click Retry, or try again in a moment. If it keeps failing, check System Health and contact Zonitix support.
