Learning Paths, Imports & Exemptions

This page describes learning paths, importing completions, SCORM packages and exemptions. Learning paths are on Team and Advanced. SCORM import is part of the preview and not yet validated end-to-end. This page is part of the reference Training, Phishing & Policy Signing.

What It Does

  • Learning paths. A path holds between 2 and 20 courses, each used once. A person on a path is assigned the first course, and finishing a course assigns the next one by itself. A course the person had already completed is skipped.
  • Pausing and deleting a path. A paused path takes nobody new and moves nobody on; what is already assigned stays. Deleting a path leaves the training already assigned through it, and what people completed stays on record.
  • Importing completions. For training people did in another system, either for one course or from a file covering several. Both ask where the completions come from, and that source is stored on every imported completion. At most 5,000 rows at a time. One bad row never stops the rest: it is skipped and listed with its reason. You cannot import your own completion.
  • SCORM packages. A saved course can carry one SCORM package. SCORM 1.2 with one lesson per package is supported; SCORM 2004 and packages with several lessons are refused. Only that the lesson reported completed or passed is used, and the lesson’s own score is not recorded. SCORM import is part of the preview and not yet validated end-to-end against real authoring tools and browsers.
  • Exemptions. An exempt person is not reminded, their manager is not told and they are not counted as late. The reason comes from a fixed list, and every exemption has an end date in the future, at most a year away. An exemption is never edited: end it and record it again.

Learning Paths

TrainingPaths holds learning paths: courses done in order. “New path” takes a “Title”, an optional description and between 2 and 20 courses, each used once. A retired course cannot stay in a path.

How The Next Step Is Handed Out

A person on a path is assigned the first course. Finishing a course assigns the next one by itself, with that course’s own days to finish; a daily run catches up anyone who was missed. Each step is an ordinary assignment, so due dates, reminders and the way it is marked done are the course’s own. A course the person had already completed is skipped, and so is a retired one.

Members

Add people from the path’s people dialog, up to 500 at a time. Someone already on the path is left as they are. “Give it to new joiners automatically” puts everyone who joins from the day it is switched on onto the path once they have started.

Progress

The people dialog shows, per person, the step they are on, its due date or that it is overdue, and when they finished. The person sees “Part of: … · step 2 of 4” on the course in their own list. People who have left are counted but not shown.

Pausing And Deleting

A paused path takes nobody new and moves nobody to their next course; what is already assigned stays. “Delete path” removes the path, its order and the list of who is on it. The training already assigned through it stays assigned and what people completed stays on record.

Importing Completions From Another System

For training people did in another training system. There are two ways in, and both ask “Where these come from” first: at least three characters, for example the name of the system and the date of the export. That source is stored on every imported completion as “Imported from …” and in the audit log entry of the import. The lists show an imported completion as “Marked by HR”, never as something the person ticked.

One Course

On TrainingPeople, choose one course and use “Import completions for this item”. Paste one person per line: email, then the date completed written as 2026-09-14, separated by a comma, semicolon or tab. A person who was never assigned the course gets the completed assignment created for them.

A File Covering Several Courses

TrainingSettings, “Import a file”, takes a CSV file or pasted text. The first line must be the column names. Three columns are found by their header: the person (“Email” or “Employee number”), the course (“Item” or “Course”) and the date (“Completed” or “Date”). The course name must match the title of a course in use; capital letters do not matter.

Dates And Limits

At most 5,000 rows at a time. The file import reads the common date forms. When a date could be day/month or month/day it is not guessed: that row is skipped until you choose “Day / month / year” or “Month / day / year” and import again. A date in the future, or more than 5 years ago, is refused. With “Redo every (months)” set, the renewal date is counted from the imported date.

Rows That Cannot Be Used

One bad row never stops the rest. A row is skipped, and listed with its reason, when the email or employee number is not an active person here, the course is not found, the person is listed twice (the first row is used), or a completion on or after that date is already on record. Emails are matched whatever their capitals. You cannot import your own completion; someone else has to.

SCORM Packages

A saved course can carry one “SCORM package (optional)”: a lesson made in an authoring tool, shown to the person after the opening page and before the reading. Uploaded video and SCORM import are new: they are part of the preview and not yet validated end-to-end against real authoring tools and browsers. Read the limits below before relying on either.

What Is Supported

SCORM 1.2 with one lesson (a single SCO) per package. The .zip can be up to 50 MB, must unpack to no more than 150 MB and hold no more than 2,000 entries, and must have imsmanifest.xml at its top level: zip the package’s contents, not the folder that holds them. Importing again replaces the previous package once the new one is complete.

What Is Refused

A SCORM 2004 package is refused with a message asking you to export it as SCORM 1.2. A package with several lessons is refused. So are a password-protected zip, a zip64 archive, a zip holding symbolic links or paths that climb out of the package, and a lesson that starts from an address outside the package. Any zip without imsmanifest.xml at its top level, which includes packages in other formats such as xAPI, is refused as not a SCORM package.

What Is Tracked

Only that the lesson reported completed or passed, and only in the person’s browser, where it unlocks “Continue”. The course is still finished the way you chose under “To mark it done”, and that is what is recorded. The lesson’s own score is not recorded. Nothing is stored between sittings, so a person cannot carry on where they left off. If a lesson never reports back, “Continue” unlocks after 30 seconds with a note, so nobody is locked out.

How It Is Served

A package is somebody else’s code, so it runs in a sandboxed frame that allows scripts and forms only. It cannot read the app, its cookies or its storage, and cannot act as the person. Its files load from an address carrying a signed pass for one person and one course that runs out after 4 hours, and stops working when the person is no longer assigned the course. Lessons that open pop-up windows, or that need cookies or browser storage, are not expected to work.

Exemptions

An exemption excuses one person from one course for a while. An exempt person is not reminded, their manager is not told and they are not counted as late; their own list shows “Exempt until” with the date. Open them from TrainingSettings, “Manage exemptions”, after choosing a course, or from “Exemptions” on TrainingPeople.

Who Can Record One

People with the permission to manage training, for a course, or with the permission to manage compliance. The permission names are under Technical detail. Nobody can exempt themselves except an administrator. A person can hold one exemption per course at a time.

Reason And End Date

The reason comes from a fixed list: “On long-term leave”, “Outside the scope of this item”, “Covered by another organisation”, “Leaving before the due date” or “Other (recorded privately)”, which needs a short private note. Every exemption has an end date in the future, at most a year away. An exemption is never edited: end it and record it again.

Suggestions From Long Leave

When someone on approved leave of 28 days or more, now or starting within a week, still has training open, TrainingPeople shows a suggestion above the roster. Nothing is recorded by itself. “Exempt until they return” records it with the reason “On long-term leave”, ending the day their leave ends.

When It Ends

While someone is exempt, the deadline of the course is moved to 14 days after the exemption ends, so they do not come back already weeks overdue. From then on the usual reminders apply.

If something here is not working as you expect, start with When something goes wrong.

The plain explanation is above. This part is for IT and developers: the exact settings, permission names, API addresses and data fields behind it. Closed: select the heading above to open it. While it is closed, your browser’s find-on-page (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) does not search this part.

Permissions Behind This Page

Where the sections above say who may see or do something, this is the permission that is checked. What each permission allows is listed in Training, Phishing & Policy Signing.
